Shine - The NECA Employer Accreditation Scheme

Shine is a new employer accreditation initiative from the North East Combined Authority, designed to recognise organisations that put fairness, opportunity and respect at the heart of work. Launched under the leadership of North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, Shine is more than an accreditation – it is a growing movement to raise standards across workplaces and create a brighter future for people and businesses alike.

Open to North East employers of all sizes and sectors, Shine supports organisations to become responsible, inclusive and forward‑thinking employers. The scheme focuses on key areas such as fair pay, skills development, employee wellbeing and sustainable growth, helping businesses strengthen their workforce while aligning with national priorities, including the Employment Rights Bill.

Shine offers a flexible, free‑to‑join framework with four levels of membership. Employers can start their journey as a subscriber and progress towards advanced accreditation by meeting the standards set out across the five Shine Beams. These beams cover essential elements of good employment practice, including workforce wellbeing, social responsibility, effective communication and representation, inclusive workforce development, and valuing and rewarding employees.

By joining Shine, employers gain access to practical tools, guidance and recognition that help them attract and retain talent, demonstrate their values, and contribute positively to the regional economy. With hundreds of organisations already taking part, Shine is quickly becoming a beacon for good work across the North East.

Ultimately, Shine is about doing the right thing for people, for business and for the region. It provides employers with the structure, support and recognition needed to go further, creating workplaces where everyone can thrive and helping to build a fairer, more inclusive North East for the future.
